day off

Today was a day off from going to the hospital for outpatient treatment. Even on the days off from going to the hospital, she does still take a couple chemo pills. She went out with my mom and did a little more shopping. Not as much damage this time, as it was only Bed, Bath and Beyond. She felt pretty good today, but got tired a few times as she was doing things. She hasn't taken pain meds in a couple days, so that's a good sign. She does continue to take the occasional pill for nausea, but overall the meds are at a pretty low quantity these days. My mom is here through tomorrow morning, then she heads home. She's been great. Anna and my mom have bonded quite a bit this week. They were close before, but probably even closer now.

Anna and TJ will spend most of next week in the city at her parent's house. Our friend Kathleen (the one that runs the marathons) will be helping with transportation, etc next week, so that's a big relief.

Enjoy the weekend.

3 days off, and something I've been putting off for a while....

She went in today for a mid-day appointment, which was a quick chemo shot. She did great. I think it was probably less than 10 minutes once they actually brought her into the room. We all went over today. Anna, TJ, my mom and me. TJ recently had his 2-year old checkup and as part of the routine, they require blood work. So, when Anna was going in for the chemo, TJ and I went to a different section of the hospital to have blood drawn. I wasn't so sure what to expect, but he did fine. He sat on my lap while one nurse held his arm and the other one drew his blood. They filled up a little vile and it went pretty quick. He was a little uncomfortable when they put the needle in, but once the blood started flowing he was more curious than anything. We counted to 10 and sang the ABC song, and then we were done. Just so no one worries... this is a totally normal thing that they order for all 2 year olds and has nothing to do with what Anna is going through. They would have ordered this regardless. She's done with chemo until Monday, so hopefully she'll have a chance to relax and get some sleep. She's been eating great and feels pretty good these days.

As most of you know, Tino (our 6 year old german shepherd) has been an important part of our family. We need to put him up for adoption. He's been staying with our old dog walker for the last 5 weeks or so, which has been great. But, we need to do something more permanent. With all of Anna's appointments and additional care, plus TJ, plus my work schedule, we think the best solution is to find a nice place for Tino to go live. He's used to having a back yard and is definitely not meant for city living at this point. He's definitely high energy. He's been great with TJ from day one, but should be eased into any situation with kids. He's about 95 pounds, so definitely not a lap dog but like to hug up on the couch or bed, if you invite him. He is 100% german shepherd (I have papers), he's neutered, and he's in good health. He does have some allergies, so in the Spring he gets a little extra itchy. He's a bit of a PITA, but he's adorable and very lovable. Please email me tom@gaff.net if you are interested in more information or know someone who might be. I appreciate your help on this one.

long session today

She had an early appointment and was up and out of the house by about 7am. Today was both the "spinal tap" version of chemo and also a shot. The spinal tap is similar to the way they'd do an epidural but its a little higher in the back and a smaller needle. After they do that, they needed to keep her laying down on her back for the next 3 hours. All in all, I think her and my mom were over there from about 7:30am until about 1:30pm or so. Definitely not the 5 minute ordeal that they had yesterday. Now that we're getting through this first week, we have a better idea of what to expect with the appointments and should be able to tell which ones are 5 minute appointments and which are half day events.

She has another appointment tomorrow (Thurs) and then we're on break until Monday. Overall, she felt pretty good today but her body was definitely pretty achy. In addition to the time at the hospital for the administration of the chemo, she definitely spent more time in bed today than she had the previous couple of days.

It's been a while since I listed out thank you messages... First off, thanks everyone for continuing to check in and post comments. We're grateful of all the continued support and the recognition that even though she is home and the cancer is in remission, that we're still facing a long battle ahead. Also, we wanted to thank the Smitty's (neighbors) for the nice card and wonderful gift. Thanks to Stephanie for the card and nice note. Thanks to John, Elisa, Johnny, Anthony, and Nicki (neighbors) for the nice balloons for her welcome home and their continued support.

Also, I received a voice mail today from Dale Knause, a former co-worker, friend and fellow Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Although, I didn't get a chance to talk with Dale, he is also working with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training to help raise awareness and funds to help fight blood cancers. Dale's family unfortunately has first hand experience with a cancer similar to Anna's. Dale will be running in the Marine Corps Marathon this coming Sunday in honor of his relative and will be thinking of Anna (and our family) throughout training and the race, which really does mean a lot to us. Thank you Dale. You can check out more information on Dale's efforts or contribute to the cause from his Team in Training webpage.

Whether you choose to donate to Kathleen's efforts, Dale's efforts and anything having to do with LLS at all is, of course, completely up to you. I do ask that everyone picks a cause (any cause) and go do something. You don't need to run a marathon or anything crazy like that. I can assure you, my fat ass won't be doing that anytime soon. You don't need to contribute money. I know the stock market has taken enough of that away lately, but find something to do and I'm sure that not only will it help, but you'll feel pretty good about it.

PS. While I think it was great that she was feeling up to shopping yesterday, let's not get carried away with all the positive comments contributing to her shopping habit.
